"We're Oregon Coast people, we're more chill." Brett told me. I really liked that, it was the cutest thing that he compared our relationship to one of his favorite places. One sunday night while Brett was on his mission, his mom told me all about Brett's love for the Oregon Coast, it was so fun hearing it from his mom that I had to go home and do my research. Needless to say, I completely fell in love with the Oregon coast. The gorgeous ocean and sand that meets the huge trees and pines. It's the most beautiful thing. It's not like a California beach, which is the kind of beach i'm used to. It's not filled with people, it's not blazing hot, it's chilly and gorgeous. More of a sight to see then an ocean to swim in. It was our kind of beach. Somewhere we can just chill, hike and enjoy the nature all around us!
We stayed in Newport and traveled up and down the coast. It was the most beautiful place in the world and definitely a dream come true! Everything was so green, the pine trees and the trees were so tall and the green just went on for miles! The weather was perfect too, not too hot and not pouring all day long! Sun and rain :) our favorite weather! Our first day we went to Sea Lion Caves, the world's largest sea cave! We drove about 20 minutes to get down there and for those who know me, I had to go to the bathroom of course! So Brett paid and just stood talking with the owners, the girl started talking to her mom about wedding plans so Brett told them we just got married on Saturday and we were on our honeymoon, her mom was so happy and excited for us that she gave Brett his money back and said this one is on the house! So we went down and saw the sea lions for free! We thought that was so nice! Total strangers let us in for free because we just got married! Later that night we went to a really nice restaurant in Depoe Bay called Tidal Raves. The view was incredible and we got a seat right by the window so we could see the ocean. As we sat down and looked over the menu, I noticed the old man sitting next to us kept watching us, that's when he asked us if we were on vacation and talking with him we ended up telling him it was our honeymoon and he talked about his married life and gave us advice on being married. We already liked Joe and Marty, they were a cute, quiet couple and they seemed t0 like us. That's when Joe said he wanted to pay for our dinner, we hesitated but he insisted, he told us we were good looking, modest kids and that's hard to find these days, especially in our age group. It doesn't matter how much he spent on us, or why he did it. It just makes me happy to know that because we have lived our lives with our standards, people really do look up to us. Even if it is for being modest and polite. It makes me happy to know that even if it is just for being good kids, someone appreciates the way we live! After dinner we said our goodbyes to the couple we promised to be like someday and hiked on huge, slippery rocks to get to the other side of the bay.
Brett really wanted to go "hunting", as in hunting for starfish and crabs and all sorts of ocean life so we got the tide schedule and went out at what was supposed to be 9:00am but the cleaning ladies at the hotel changed our clock without us knowing so we woke up at 6:00am and headed to the beach that was 20 minutes away. When we got there we checked our clocks and we were 2 hours early instead of being 1 hour early like we had planned. Haha it was freezing and we were exhausted. It was the funniest thing telling people because what kind of honeymoon do you wake up at six in the morning? But it was fun, we climbed on rocks and explored. There were so many starfish and little crabs everywhere, we felt like little kids at Disneyland!
The next day we actually slept in, so go us! Then we went to the Newport aquarium, it was a rainy day and we thought it'd be a good idea. But turns out the big animals live outside so we ended up getting wet anyway! It was so fun to see the sea lions, seals and otters being fed. The inside part of the aquarium was fun too, they had jellyfish and the biggest crabs in the ocean! We also saw some sharks and the birds were the cutest things! One looked like a penguin, it was our favorite! After the aquarium we asked the locals where we should eat, we wanted the good stuff not just whats advertised. We got awesome leads and we ended up at a crab shack where Brett finally got his crab. He was so happy!
We went exploring the next morning and found more treasures! It was my favorite beach, we had so much fun running around and taking pictures. We also went to The Chowder Bowl, for those of you looking for some yummy clam chowder, go there! Not Mo's. haha When we talked to the locals, I asked them about Mo's because everyone told me to go there and they said not Mo's! They say the locals won't even step in Mo's.... so, we didn't even bother going there. We also loved Newport Cafe, they had breakfast and seafood all day! That was our go to late dinner place and chocolate chip pancakes place, their food was all made from scratch and it tasted better than anything else I've ever had! Brett is still dreaming about their Jalapeno burger, made special ;)
Another rainy day came in so we went to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse! It was so tall and pretty. I love lighthouses, it makes me feel like i'm actually on the coast :) It was really fun learning about the history of lighthouses and the spiral stairs were so fun! That concluded our days in Newport, so we hoped in the car and drove to Portland, Oregon to see the temple! It wasn't till we started packing our bags that we noticed all our room keys everywhere. We would always leave the hotel and when we got back we could never find the room keys! or after we'd get new ones we'd take the old room key and it wouldn't work in the room, haha so Brett made good friends with the Managing staff!
On the ride to Portland we found the prettiest spots for pictures, and you all know I'm addicted to taking pictures of beautiful things! We love the trees covered in moss, so much green! We also found this awesome tree trunk shaped like a chair. The drive was long but with all the beauty around us it went by so fast we didn't even notice! Our plan was to get up early and go to the temple so we could start driving to Michigan but when the alarm went off we weren't so eager to get up. We ended up going to a later session and we decided we'd do sealings, when we got to the sealing office they didn't have a group we could go with, but the sealer told us to come back at 1 and watch a sealing in Portuguese. So we went to a session and came back for the sealing, we met the bride and groom and he had served in Curitiba and she was from Curitiba! What a small world we live in, she had only been in the states for two months and knew very little English, so i became her helper after the sealing. It was the neatest experience to hear the sealing in Portuguese. It touched me in ways I can't put in words, it was so fun seeing those two so madly in love, again the temple is magical. I can't explain the Spirit you feel inside.
So we ended up leaving a lot later than expected but it was a tender mercy. I know we were meant to be in the temple at that time. It was beautiful, the Portland temple is really unique and beautiful. We loved it. On the way out of Portland we found the Multnomah Falls and it was gorgeous! Just right in the middle of no where! And it was so fun because I had pinned it on Pinterest, hoping someday I'd take Brett there, so it was like a wish come true! That concluded the honeymoon, then we started driving to Michigan... which was the longest drive of my life. 50 hours! We had the best honeymoon in the world, we met so many wonderful people, ate incredible food and played like little children.... Now it's time for grown up things like doing laundry and cleaning ;) So check back for Mount Rushmore and Wall drug on the next post! :) xoxo We love you guys!
